Ireland men’s and women’s teams unbeaten after day 1 at U16 Four Nations

Ireland’s U16 men’s and women’s teams made impressive starts to their Four Nations campaigns on Tuesda. Both sides were unbeaten on day one of the tournament, registering convincing wins in the process, at the National Basketball Arena. 

Ireland’s U16 women made the perfect start for the hosts, defeating Wales 132-23. Ireland led 33-5 after the end of the first quarter and didn’t look back. Lucy Walsh top scored for Ireland, on 22 points, with Eabha Booth picking up 17 and Priya O’Donovan adding 15, with each of the 12-person squad getting valuable minutes.

Paul O’Brien’s side followed up with a 96-47 victory over Scotland women, in the final game of the day, Katie Behan and Naomi Farrington both had 13 points, with Booth adding another 12 to her day’s tally.

Ireland’s U16 women will now face a winner-takes-all title decider against England at 5pm on Wednesday, after England posted a 113-45 win over Scotland in the tournament opener, followed by a 119-29 success over Wales on Tuesday afternoon.

Ireland’s U16 men, who come into the tournament as defending champions, only played once on the opening day, defeating Wales 95-46. Kieran Quinn, who was a member of the 2023 U16 Four Nations winning squad, was among those who shone, racking up 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Markas Mikalickas top scored for Paul Kelleher’s side, on 14 points, with Harry Lynch contributing 12.

England U16 men also picked a win in their opening game, 119-49 against Scotland. On Wednesday England face Wales at 9am, while Ireland face Wales at 11am - should both England and Ireland pick up their second wins, it would set up another tournament decider, at 7pm.
